Young Spirit

We recently added a young spirit to our herd, a one year old Arabian filly. Cute as a button and a joy to handle. Having just lost the last horse of our ‘old stock’ this young spirit sure changed the energy around the barn.

Upon getting to know Shana I noticed how intact and unblemished her spirit is. Barbara in NY, the woman that foaled and raised the filly, had done a terrific job to let the baby grow up without concern or worry. Now in my care, I realized how important it is for me to help her continue on the path of confidence and well being.

Turns out the challenge to keep a horses spirit intact is much different from what I had been doing for years. Until I met the baby, I had usually tried to nurse damaged or misunderstood spirits back to well being. Any horse that comes into our lives, in particular if it is already trained usually carries baggage. It might not like cross-ties, has issues with the vet, a hard time trailering, and so on and so on. This little filly however, has not shown me any baggage yet.
Does she have an opinion… absolutely. Have I asked her to learn some things that make absolutely no sense to her (fly spray!)… definitely. However, her level of confidence and positivism is beyond any horse I have ever cared for.
For me it translates into a new way of being with the horse. This filly does not ‘need’ me in the way some of the older horses needed me. This young horse is asking me to be with her, to train her and to show up for her as a leader of a different kind. A leader that does not offer space for the broken spirit to heal, but as a leader that allows for expansion of a perfect spirit and for co-creation of a life-long relationship.
